Real-Time Google Analytics

I’ve always hated that GA had a delay of several hours (if not a full day). With the release of Real time views in Google Analytics, now you can see what’s going on in your site in near real time.

Of course, to be useful, your site has to actually have some significant activity per minute and not just the ocassional visit.

This opens up a big opportunity for site optimization, since you could actually see the result of changes in your campaigns over a short period of time.

“The euro zone is showing the symptoms of an internal balance-of-payments crisis, with self-fulfilling runs on countries, because at bottom that is the nature of its troubles. And such crises put extraordinary pressure on exchange-rate pegs, no matter how permanent policymakers claim them to be.”

Differing economic performance (policy, productivity, industrial production, consumption) has an effect on the currency exchange rate; I am not sure if I agree that the Euro is just an “exchange-rate peg”, since I don’t know enough, but it makes sense that currency depreciation is something that needs to happen but can’t happen because of the Euro.

Ergo - the Euro is dead?

More on the Euro... and the leading Europe economy, Germany...

More on the Euro... and the leading Europe economy, Germany...

Community and the inevitability of failure

I was reading Slate’s review of this week’s Community episode… and it reminded me why this show is doomed to not last.

Maybe it is too complicated or too smart for its own sake; I love most of the episodes and I don’t get many of the references they make… somehow the dynamics and the characters are so well defined that even when you don’t get all the references, you still enjoy every line.

I just hope that along with 30 Rock and Parks and Recreation, it keeps going for a couple more seasons. I don’t include The Office in my list anymore, and it is not because Michael isn’t there, it is just that, humm, it’s just not as smart or alluring as it used to be.

Stone Soup

Stone Soup

A note to myself - things to remember when setting up an app in IIS 7.5

The identity model in IIS 7.5 changed, so to make the application work correctly make sure:

1 - You have Kernel Mode Authentication enabled,

2 - The IIS Apppool<<your app pool name» account has permissions to the folder where you app resides (read). Note, this is a special account that resides on the local computer, and the account is created after you start the APP Pool for the first time.

3 - If you’re going to debug locally (for development of course), make sure you do the DisableStrictNamesChecking and BackConnectionHostNames changes in your registry.

4 - Obvious, but anonymous authentication needs to be disabled.

5 - Recommendation: keep integrated mode on for the application pool, the application pool user default of “ApplicationPoolIdentity” is a must.

Use the “TEST” button in the “Basic Settings” dialog on the website you are configuring to make sure it works.

His main complaints:

- It’s integrated but it’s too messy (ah? this is one of the features all phones will end up having, like it or not - it is the way it is supposed to work). He can’t figure out where each message comes from even though the messages are clearly labeled.

- Calendar - are you really saying that the calendar on the iPhone is really better? A draw at least.

- Better app selection - before, the complaint was about quantity, now that the quantity argument has been debunked - now it is called “selection”. Yes, most major apps will appear first on the iPhone, but things are changing. Then he picks the “sex and other stuff” page (just to make his point right?).

- iCloud vs. Skydrive - a “draw”… notwithstanding the fact that Skydrive was before way before iCloud was (or at least I’ve been using it since day one when I got my phone).

Lately, some of the criticism is becoming far less logical and it boils down really, to a matter of style and what you like to use. WP7 has caught up.

By the way, no mention on this review of Zune, the client? Games? integration with XBox?

I had an iPhone, and really, I changed because of iTunes and into the Zune subscription model. I ended up liking this phone much more, it feels less intrusive and somehow (the horror) more polished.

"Most Windows users don’t use Macs, but most Mac users use Windows."

“Most Windows users don’t use Macs, but most Mac users use Windows.”

- Just there, I don’t remember
